So, you’ve got a business idea, perhaps a little bit of cash and a mind racing with creativity.

But…you need a little guidance on where to start & what you’re potentially getting yourself into.

Finding yourself a small business mentor is a great way to help you get your feet off the ground. But, if you want the best small business mentor, you need to take the right steps to ensure you’re finding a great match.

So, here are my 5 tips on how to find the right mentor perfect for you.

1 – RESEARCH THEIR EXPERIENCE.

A lot of people can talk the talk but I recommend for you to do your research on how they have also ‘walked the walk’ .The best mentors are typically the ones who have had a diverse range of experience, mentees and their own businesses (some of which have even failed!) so that their experience is credible.

2 – PREFERENCE SOMEONE LIKE-MINDED.

If you want to find the best mentor, it’s always a good idea to try steer away from someone within your current organisation or social circle. Picking someone who is like-minded in their life experiences but not necessarily directly related to you, is often your best bet. This way, they understand your perspective & goals, and can add value by steering the conversation on the right track – a track you may not currently be exposed to!

3 – SET CLEAR GOALS BEFORE YOUR INITIAL CONSULTATION

Setting a clear goal for your future can really help you steer the initial conversation with your mentor in the right direction. If you’re discussing your goals straight up, they will be able to have a conversation with you on the process they can help you go through to achieve the ultimate end goal. A good mentor will also be transparent with you as to whether that goal is achievable, depending on how ambitious you want to be.

After discussing this topic in an initial consult, if you’re not left feeling excited, driven & confident…they’re simply not for you. (and that’s okay, you’ll find a match soon!)

4 – LOOK FOR TESTIMONIALS OR ASK FOR A REFERENCE

Sometimes after the initial consult you may still feel as though you need an additional safety net before you make your final decision. Asking them for one of their client’s numbers for a brief chat or looking through their testimonials can be a great way to make you feel certain they are the choice for you.
